The roles of structure and disorder in the onset of high Tc superconductivity

Iron pnictide superconductors are the newest family of unconventional superconductors, discovered in 2008 by Hosono. A magnetic phase is close to the superconducting composition and spin fluctuations are the candidates for the pairing interaction. These materials are also very promising for a large number of applications.

A recently approved three year PRIN project, kickoff March 2014, is devoted to investigate the role of defects and disorder in these compoundss. They are both required for hardening the material in view of current applications, and for indirectly probing the candidate pairing mechanism. The Parma-Pavia group is investigating magnetic and superconducting properties of iron pnictides and related compounds by means of NMR and MuSR measurements and has a vast record of publications on the subject in the past few years.
