This question is foremost in the minds of the public when someone discusses about earthquake occurrence. I will briefly jexplain why statistical physics can provide powerfull tools to address the above question. In particular I will illustrate the main mechanical models of earthquake triggerring ranging from fully deterministic ones to unpredictable ones. I will also introduce the point-process approach to seismic occurrence and its applications in the development of forecasting models
